Case of Obstinate Constipation of the Bowels, Treated by Small Doses of Strychnine

Ram Golam, Chamar cooly, aged 43, was admitted on the 23rd June, 1865, with the following symptoms Abdomen tympanitic, considerably swollen, and slightly painful; tongue moist, with a yellow fur in the centre ; pulse feeble ; countenance anxious ; skin cool. States that the bowels have been confined for seven days, and that all this time he lias had pain in the belly. He has taken quantities of native medicines, but without effect. Latterly he has had vomitinjg, and 011 two occasions large worms have been discharged by the mouth. To have four grains of carbonate of ammonia every two hours. Belly to be fomented with warm water and turpentine. 24<7i.?Pulse improved somewhat ; no vomiting ; bowels still confined. Ordered calomel six grains, with four drops of croton oil. If no motion occurs in eight hours, to have an injection of six drachms of salt, three fluid drachms of oil of turpentine, and twelve ounces of tepid water. 2oth.?Bowels as confined as before. To take two ounces of castor oil and three drachms of oil of turpentine. To have a warm bath also, and warm milk to drink.
